Are violent crimes on the rise in California?

On Behalf of | Jan 11, 2022 | Criminal Defense

As with any topic that can stir fear, violent crime is one that folks often try to theorize on or explain. While the reality is acts of violence can be senseless, reviewing recent statistics can help paint a clearer picture of evolving crime rates.

Numbers increase nationwide

For starters, it can be helpful to get a glimpse of what’s happening on a national level. According to The Atlantic, through 2020 and 2021, violent crimes, including aggravated assault and murder, were on the rise. Homicide alone rose by 30% in 2020, which is, unfortunately, a record-breaking statistic. Another number that is interesting to look at in conjunction with the homicide rate is before 2020, about two-thirds of homicides were shootings, and this number was over three-fourths in 2020. This increase could allude to more American citizens owning or using guns.

Crime in California

On a more local scale, the rise in violent crime is also an issue. The Public Policy Institute of California reports that in 2021, homicide rates were up by 17% across Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Oakland. More broadly, from early to mid-2021, 8,000 to 10,000 violent crimes occurred each month.

Additionally, property crimes also saw an increase last year in some of California’s major cities. Early in 2020 and the pandemic, there was a decline in these crimes nationwide and statewide. But, in California’s major cities, these crime rates rose back up in 2021.

Although many more years will have to pass by to see if violent crimes continue to climb or decrease across the state, abrupt brutality or death can tear families apart. This includes both loved ones who are victims and alleged criminal offenders. If you or someone you know is facing accusations of having committed a violent crime, professional guidance may help lead to a second chance.
